　一人の著者の論文集であるVariorum Collected Studiesシリーズから、気鋭の研究者É. Rebillardのものが出版された。詳細についてはAshgateのホームページを参照のこと。Variorum Collected Studiesシリーズは、学術雑誌や論文集に掲載された論文を10〜20本程度再録して一冊にまとめている。ある著者の論文を集める際には、たいていさまざまな雑誌をチェックしていちいちコピーしなければならず面倒なものだが、このようにまとめて出版されると大変有り難い。
　さて、著者Rebillardは、本書のタイトルに示されている通り、これまで古代末期における宗教的慣習の変容についての研究を深めてきた。また最近では、その変容を通じて、古代末期の人々の心性、とくに宗教的アイデンティティの問題をも追及している。

本書に収録された論文もそうした問題に深く関わるものである。第一部には、アウグスティヌスの書簡と説教を史料として分析した論稿が並ぶ。第二部は、アウグスティヌスといわゆる「ペラギウス派」との論争について、そして第三部は古代末期における埋葬と宗教との関係についての論文を収める。第一部から第三部まで、それぞれが他に書籍として出版された研究成果と深い関連性を持っているようである。
　また本書に関して注目すべきは、収録された論文18本のうち、実に15本が、元々の掲載時には仏語であったものを英訳し再録したものである、という点である（翻訳自体は著者ではなく別の方によって行なわれている）。著者が現在はアメリカの大学に在籍しているという事情もあるだろうが、学界において英語が占めるウェイトの高さを思わずにはいられない。
